Privacy issue - social media

'His submission explains that searches on Google, Twitter, Facebook and YouTube are likely to involve communicating with a "web-based platform" abroad and are therefore "external communications" which do not "require a person or a set of premises to be named in the interception warrant". Emails sent or received from abroad could be intercepted in a similar way.'

Privacy we all want it and feel it is our right to have it. The question is how do we protect it on social media? We would all take offense to people snooping through our private mailed letters (if you still receive any) or listen to our private conversations. On social media it is very important to make sure your privacy setting are set according to your preferences. In the end it is everyone's own responsibility not to up-load sensitive or personal information in public forums in order to protect your own privacy. Some articles of note on this issue are: How Social Media is infringing on your Privacy and Social Media mass surveillance ...

Social Media used by Libraries

Libraries are submerging themselves in social media to the benefit to themselves and their borrowers. It is a great way for them to reach our and inform their members of all their programs and facilities. It is also a wonderful way for libraries to share ideas, show off all the fantastic there accomplishments and keep up to date with innovations in the industry and related technologies. Libraries are broadening their horizons through blogs, twitter, facebook and pinterest. Click on each to see wonderful examples of Library's accounts. Some articles about this wonderful occurrence are Social Media in the Library, The Social Library and 20 ways Librarys and using Pinterest. Also a list of Australian Library Blogs can be found here.

Social media Etiquette -personal and professional setting

Social media is a fabulous way to interact and share information both personally and professionally. Social media can turn nasty though when people forget to extend people the same courtesy to others the same way you would a person face to face. Manners are important for every interaction in life. On social media platforms I feel people can be very forgetful of this. Bad behavior is unacceptable regards if it is in person or on-line; though people seem to be inclined to say (or rather type) things they would never dream of uttering out loud to another person, in a public forums for the whole world to see. The worst of these are death threats. It is very frustrating. It is the main reason I have steered clear of social media for personal use until undertaking this subject.

It is very important that on your social media accounts you are mindful of what you up-load and who can see. We all interact with different people in our daily life and moderate our behavior to what is appropriate to the setting and our audience. On social media sites it should be no different. If you have colleagues and friends on the same account it can be a bit troublesome. All work places have codes of conduct. These codes may be extended to social media platforms. Such as the Communications Council.

"The Communications Council is the peak body representing agencies in the marketing

communications industry to media, government and the public. " The Communications

Council has a Social Media Code of Conduct which can be viewed here.

Guides on this issue I have found are Social Media Etiquette : How to connect with people and Social Media Etiquette : Be Followable.

Copyright blues

Copyright, plagiarism and sharing images are all tangled and a mess. The ease in which images can be copied from the net and used for personal use leads may of us to believe that it must be ok and legal. This is not the case.  I have found a site about the mess copyright laws can get you in.

The $8,000 Mistake That All Bloggers Should Beware

"Current Fair Use image copyright laws say that you’re financially liable for posting copyrighted images, even if:

  • You did it by accident
  • You immediately take down the picture after receiving a DMCA takedown notice
  • The picture is resized
  • If the picture is licensed to your web developer (Getty Images requires that you get your own license, thankyouverymuch)
  • You link back to the photo source and cite the photographer’s name
  • Your site isn’t commercial and you make no money from your blog
  • You have a disclaimer on the site
  • The pic is embedded instead of saved on your server
  • You found it on the Internet (that’s not an excuse!)"
The best way to avoid this is to use only images you have taken yourself. But other helpful information was found at this site The Best Ways to Be Sure You're Legally Using Online Photos the best of which I believe is "Assume Every Image You Find Online is Copyrighted"
